Description

Contemporary history in a nutshell: in Hochwolkersdorf, the memorial room documents the events of April 1945 that led to the birth of the Second Republic. Dr. Karl Renner negotiated the future of Austria with the Soviet commanders here in the Bucklige Welt.

In the final days of the Second World War, the world looked to Hochwolkersdorf near Wiener Neustadt: the Red Army had set up its first command post in Lower Austria here during the advance on Vienna and arranged an important meeting. Dr. Karl Renner and a member of the resistance group O5 talked to the Russians about shortening the fighting for Vienna and restoring democratic institutions in Austria. As not only Stalin but also the Western powers recognized Dr. Renner, these talks led to the establishment of a provisional government and marked the birth of the Second Republic.

Almost 200 documents and photos in the 1945 memorial room bear witness to the events of that time. More details about the central figure of the historical negotiations can be found just half an hour away: in the Dr. Karl Renner Museum of Contemporary History in Gloggnitz.
