Pfarrkirche Wiesmath

Church, Historical sites

Description

The parish church in Wiesmath is situated on a hilltop which slopes gently on three sides, but steeply on the east side. The present church was originally built as a castle and later rededicated as a church. In the course of renovations around 1498, the parish church was consecrated to the patron saints Peter and Paul.

As is often the case with fortified buildings in the Bucklige Welt, not much remains of the fortified churchyard, but the church itself has been preserved as a fortified church. As in most villages in the Bucklige Welt, the church was not only built to serve God, but also to defend and protect the local population, who were so often besieged by the enemy. Wiesmath was the only village to have a fortified "cattle yard" for the recovery of livestock in addition to the actual fortified churchyard. Only three such fortifications are known in Lower Austria. Five defensive bays on the top of the wall provided extensive defense, and a cast-iron bay still protects the church entrance today. A hidden staircase in the masonry of the triumphal arch leads to the attic. The battlements of the defensive wall were only removed in more recent times. The moat existed as a so-called "church moat" until 1874.

The tower was given a baroque spire at the beginning of the 18th century and the interior of the church was also baroqueized. The last extensive renovation took place in 2014.

On a clear day, the tower offers the viewer a sweeping view - in the west as far as the snow-capped peaks of the Rax, Schneeberg and Schneealpe, while the silvery surface of Lake Neusiedl can be seen in the east.
