Wallfahrtskirche Maria Schnee
Church
Description
Excursion destinations and pilgrimage site Maria Schnee: the place of pilgrimage in the Bucklige Welt offers many beautiful sights - and invites you to go on a family hike.
A church was mentioned here as early as 1503 - in the Vienna Alps at the Kaltenegg site not far from Lichtenegg. In 1631, documents document a branch church dedicated to Radegundis and Oswald. In the centuries that followed, the church was both destroyed and renovated.
When her family was spared from the great stock market crash of 1872, a certain Antonia Winter had a two-towered church and vicarage built out of gratitude. This made a new building in the tradition of baroque pilgrimage churches possible. The patronage was taken over by the parish of Lichtenegg.
Today, the sacred building in the Wilhelminian style - an architectural mix of classical and baroque - is a popular place of pilgrimage. Countless pilgrims come to the church at 850 m above sea level every year. The Rax and Schneeberg form a picturesque backdrop.
Hikers also appreciate the easy route from the village center of Kaltenberg up to the enchanting church: the path runs along gentle meadows, fields and streams and is particularly popular with families with children. Finally, the hike to Maria Schnee also leads across the large forest playground - with a tree house and rope jungle.
