Wehrkirche Lichtenegg

Church, Historical sites

Description

The original complex in Lichtenegg, built around 1200, was expanded in the 15th century into a fortified complex with a defensive upper storey in the nave and in the defensive tower. This fortified church is one of the few almost completely preserved fortified churches with the surrounding round-towered wall with beam holes for the battlements and the church with tower, which was raised specifically for defensive purposes.

The extensive defensive walls were completely preserved and equipped with battlements until the construction of the elementary school in 1869. Embrasures in the curtain wall and in the masonry of the upper storeys of the tower, a secret mezzanine and a built-in chamber on the upper storey still bear witness to a fortified past. Wooden supports (padded timbers) in the embrasures bear witness to the use of firearms, so-called hook rifles. The battlements of the defensive wall were only removed after 1880.

An oven with a cooking area in the church tower and recreational facilities as well as special defensive equipment are still preserved today.
