Berg- & Felsenkirche Pitten

Church

Description

The castle hill of Pitten with the castle and the mountain church is a magnificent sight. The baroque mountain church is dedicated to St. George and dates back to the 18th century.
It is typical of the region - the church is surrounded by a wall with battlements, making it one of the region's fortified churches. It is well worth the climb to the church, as it offers a magnificent view of the Hohe Wand, Schneeberg, Rax, Semmering and Hochwechsel.

Right behind the mountain church is a rare rock church. It contains frescoes from the 13th century. The use of the rock church as a place of worship in pre-Christian times can be assumed based on numerous finds from Roman times and earlier.
