Pfarrkirche Hochwolkersdorf
Church, Historical sites
Description
There is historical evidence that a chapel called Wolfkersdorf stood where Hochwolkersdorf stands today in 1203. Archbishop Eberhard II of Salzburg detached Wolfkersdorf from the previous parish of Bromberg and elevated it to an independent parish. According to legend, the chapel was converted into a fortress with ramparts and a moat around 1329.
In 1737, the church was partially demolished, rebuilt and given a small wooden tower. The old fortified church had suffered particularly during the Reformation, and after many renovations, the church was enlarged in 1862. In the following years, the church was extended with a brick tower, a sacristy, a confessional chapel and an entrance hall. In 1932, a chapel in honor of the Mother of God was added. As the church was too small and cramped and many people attended the service standing up, the decision was made to build a new church.
The foundation stone was laid on October 26, 1961, and Archbishop Coadjutor Dr. Franz Jachym consecrated the newly built church on July 14, 1963.
The current parish church is dedicated to St. Laurentius and celebrates its patron saint's day on August 10.
